Door Blinds, Roman Gods, and NASA – 5 Door Facts

We rarely think about doors, even though we use them multiple times every day. How many times have you used a door today? Doors are so commonplace, so ingrained into normal life that we don’t have to think about them, unless of course there is a problem. But doors are such marvelous things really that enrich our homes in numerous ways. As the gatekeepers of our homes they are a barrier of privacy and protection between the chaotic outside world and our inner sanctum. Doors are where wonderful beginnings happen whether that’s the beginning of Fido’s favorite walk or the start of a holiday visit from family or friends. It’s through doors that our lives move every day, and yet we rarely stop to think about them, let alone things like door blinds or shades. So here are 5 interesting things about doors to ponder next time you’re walking through one.

Door Blinds, Roman Gods, and NASA – 5 Interesting Door Facts near Miami, Florida (FL)

1) The oldest door ever discovered was unearthed in 2010 in Zurich. Using dendrochronology, the wooden door was dated to the Stone Age. And while the Zurich door is the oldest ever discovered, the provable use of doors dates all the way back to Ancient Egypt. Meaning that man has been using doors for at least 4,000 years. In the last 500 years many of the door designs popular today came into use including French doors that became popular in 17th century Renaissance France and the sliding glass door, which came into popular use in America in the early 1900s.

2) Janus is the Roman god of doors and gates. He was the god of transitions and represented both the start and the end. Janus’s influence still echoes through modern society. Romans had doors that opened inward to welcome Janus into their homes, and today many homes still employ an inward opening front door. And January, the first calendar month, gets its name from Janus as it is the month that transitions us into a new year.

3) One of arguably the most well know quotes about doors was made famous by Alexander Graham Bell. “When one door closes another door opens, but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” It reflects on the turmoil of transitions, and the symbolic place of doors at the beginning and ending of events.

4) The world's tallest door is located at the NASA Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center. Behind the 456-foot-tall bay doors NASA assembles its space bound vehicles including the Space Shuttle. It takes 45 minutes to open the world’s tallest door, which is longer than a football field.

5) While all our facts about doors are interesting, the one most compelling to homeowners is the fact that glass doors and windows are one of the biggest culprits of energy loss in a home. Up to 30% of your hard-earned energy could be escaping through this weak point. French doors and sliding glass doors are no exception.
